Constantly Having Negative Thoughts? Get Outside and Talk a Walk!
A National Academy of Sciences study found that people who took a 90-minute walk outdoors reported decreased rumination. Rumination is when individuals have repetitive negative thoughts focused on themselves. Rumination is also a known risk factor for mental illness. The study also found improved regulation of the subgenual prefrontal cortex (sgPFC), an area of the brain that has been shown in additional studies to be associated with social and behavioral withdrawal.
If you find yourself ruminating and increasingly withdrawing from relationships, then you can support your mental wellness by taking a walk outdoors while thinking positive, grateful, selfless thoughts.
